Tasha Tilberg didn't set out to be a model; her aspirations lay further afield, literally, in farming or as a veterinarian. Still, by the tender age of fourteen, she found herself in an entirely different world, not of the quietude of nature but in the flashing lights and centre-stage of modelling. Little did Tasha realise then that what began as a suggestion by her sister would propel her to become a model not of standard accomplishments, but one who would grace the covers of international magazines right from the genesis of her career.

Despite the fashion industry reputation as being incredibly competitive and notoriously tough, Tasha navigated her early years with ease and optimism, while also acknowledging the challenges. “I actually enjoyed it a lot, especially travelling and working, providing for myself and my family. Yet I also felt very uncomfortable in any limelight and, especially socially, was very shy. I also had a bit of pressure, not enough balance, and not enough mentorship in a positive way. Back then, we weren't treated like the athletes we are. There were no yoga classes or coaches to help your body with the stressors, or the demands of shoots and constant flying; you just were on your own path, and if you didn't find positive ways to cope, you'd find negative ways.”

Tasha's entrance into the world coincided with the end of one of fashion's most notable eras. She found herself walking alongside models such as Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford in the reign of the 'Supers, ' never comparing and, instead, always unapologetically herself. “Those models were larger than life; my era decidedly had women of many kinds and personalities. Personality emerged as an important component for success and forged the way for strong, interesting women.” Tasha muses, offering advice to those entering this world. “Developing interests outside the industry, as well as artistic and musical interests and keeping current about global affairs, is always essential.” But possibly the most significant words of advice, “always treat others kindly and with respect, and work together as a team.”

Hailing from Canada, Tasha proudly represents her country and showcases her fellow citizens' work. “I love working with Canadian brands; it always makes my heart a little happier. We are a small country but have a powerful sense of unity, as we are kind, welcoming, hardworking people,” she expresses. When she's not modelling, Tasha enjoys reconnecting with this land she holds so dear to her, spending time in nature and pursuing creative interests. “My ancestors gave me a strong pull to land, and I generally gravitate to natural spaces. I also appreciate hard work; I typically thrive with manual labour, and I find being outside on a sunny day – digging in the earth or hiking – my idea of perfection. I also enjoy growing many things and have been learning to weave baskets with the willow that I grow. Also, music is big; I enjoy writing and playing music.”

Tasha exudes a sense of inner calm and a beacon of self-awareness that constructively guides her on her path, and her strong affinity with nature has even led her to live off-grid for a while. This equitable existence has undoubtedly helped her to remain grounded and achieve longevity. “I have generally felt this was the perfect way to balance such an urban and sometimes shallow-seeming industry, giving me some depth of character and an important grounding.”

This ethos and deep connection to the land infuse Tasha's principles around sustainability and inform the projects she chooses, ensuring she remains committed to her environmental objectives. “I work closely with my agent to align with forward-thinking brands as much as I can.” In this regard, Tasha says she is open to collaborations. She also encourages others, including brands, to adopt her intentional philosophy, stating, “We must do what we can as individuals to live by our moral standard and use any platform we have to help others and support causes that are important to us as humans. I think designers can utilise vintage clothes and make better choices for the environment as well as give their garment workers a living wage.”

Reflecting upon the highlights of a career that began with different intentions, Tasha appreciates the life the industry has afforded her. “Some of my defining moments might be my gratitude for my longevity. I have paused in the business many times – when my children were young, and other times I needed a break – and every time I felt welcomed back.” However, she recognises there is room for improvement for established models. “There is always more work to be done. But I believe there is a great opportunity for women to continue to showcase their health and beauty in all their forms, and to enjoy the creative aspects of our job.”

With a career that spans decades in an industry that is unrelenting in its demands and still places too much value on youth, Tasha Tilberg is a testament to a life filled with balance and integrity. She demonstrates the significance of symbiosis in our personal and professional lives, and also with our planet. There is a quiet resilience, and an authentic and harmonious spirit about her – a standard from which all models, current and future, can learn.
