MIU MIU SS25

Miu Miu Spring Summer 2025 collection. Paris, 1st October

Words by Sandy Aziz.

Hot off the press! Miu Miu presented its Spring/Summer 2025 collection titled ā€œSalt Looks Like Sugarā€ via a flavourful intersection of art, cinema, and fashion. Of course, in true Miu Miu fashion, there are always layers and more than meets the eye.Ā

This season, Turner Prize-nominated artist Goshka Macuga developed ā€œSalt Looks Like Sugarā€ for the Miu Miu show ā€“ a project incorporating a newspaper titled The Truthless Times and reporting tales of truth, misinformation, and manipulation. And if that wasnā€™t already multilayered, the audienceā€™s location intentionally mimics the mechanics of a printing press, starting with knowledge, then investigation of truth, and finally resulting in the distortion of information - something that closely mirrors the current reality we live in.Ā

The collection itself is also multilayered. Creative Director and founder of the brand, Miuccia Prada, begins the collection in the most pure form via basic white cotton garments (in collaboration with Petit Bateau) before gradually moving into distortion, much like that of the printing press and distortion of information. Above-the-elbow fingerless socklike gloves are accented with belts, while cardigan sweaters are wrapped and tied into tops instead of worn as outerwear. And perhaps this is where we question the truth - is this still outerwear? It still appears on the outside despite not being worn in the conventional manner that society holds to be true. Boxy blazers drape the modelā€™s shoulders, giving elements of a reporter reporting for duty, while skirts appear in modest knee length, juxtaposing the usual Miu Miu microminis. The collectionā€™s palette consists of pale pinks, sky blues, darker browns, and 70s prints.Ā

Truth be told, in these sometimes truthless times, this is more than just a collection. This is a fashion statement and one that reiterates the importance of fashion as a form of freedom of expression and even beyond that. This is the statement of this season ā€“ one that encourages the perceivers to continue to challenge fact vs. fiction, freedom vs. oppression, and representation vs. suppression.
