If you’re seeking a weekend escape that captures the essence of a nostalgic British seaside town, look no further than The George and Heart House in Margate. This boutique hotel is a charming blend of history and modern comfort, offering a perfect respite from the frenetic nature of everyday life.

Words by Alton Hetariki.

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the Margate Promenade, this Grade II listed building dates back to the 18th century when it served as an old coaching inn. Formerly The George Hotel, it has been lovingly restored by new owners Kelly Love and Dan Williams, who added 'Heart' to its name. Now revamped as The George and Heart House, it radiates character, with its rich history seamlessly woven into the modern décor.

We stayed in The Heritage Suite, which comfortably sleeps four and occupies an entire floor. The spacious open-plan living-dining area, master bedroom, and optional twin room provide ample relaxing space. Prominent features include a free-standing bath, a Venetian-plastered wet room, and a stylishly exposed original brickwork and timbers. Everything from the sumptuous velvets to the eclectic mix of up-cycled furniture oozes personality and charm. Organic cotton linens and natural toiletries add a touch of luxury, while the suite’s curated Spotify soundtrack sets the ambience.

Downstairs, the pub area is divided into three cosy spaces: a saloon-style pub with a log fire and  hanging Kentish hops, a vibrant restaurant boasting a seasonal menu focused on local Kent produce, and Barry’s Nook, a hidden gem perfect for a quiet retreat. The hotel also features a Zen Den treatment room and exclusive access to a quirky private minibar overlooking Love Lane—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

It's also worth noting the room has a separate entry with direct access through the Stables Courtyard, allowing you to come and go as you please – something we made full use of for our fashion shoot, traipsing back and forth for each outfit change. The George and Heart House truly feels like a home away from home. Its thoughtfully designed rooms by a team of local artists and friendly atmosphere make it an ideal base for exploring the vibrant seaside town of Margate.
