The journey to Roulotte Retreat takes you through the beautiful landscapes of Melrose, setting a serene tone for your stay. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Avril and Alan, the retreat's owners, whose passion for this space is evident in every detail. They’ve created an environment where guests can truly relax and embrace the tranquil surroundings in the rewilded meadow.

During our visit, we experienced two of the retreat’s most distinctive accommodations: Horseshoe Cottage with Ruby Bowtop and Rosa Bella. Horseshoe Cottage, originally the stables for farm horses, offers cosy, family-friendly lodging with all the modern amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Attached to this is Ruby, a bright and charming 1930s Romany Bowtop caravan. This combination brings together the comfort of a cottage with the nostalgia and romance of an authentic Gypsy living wagon, creating a one-of-a-kind experience in a peaceful woodland garden.
Meanwhile, Rosa Bella, another of the retreat's roulottes, is perfect for couples or friends seeking a vibrant, Bohemian atmosphere. Adorned with vintage decor in deep jewel tones, it features an alcove bed, a wood-burning stove, and a small kitchen. Its raised deck is ideal for outdoor dining, while the cosy interior is perfect for unwinding by the wood burning stove. Both Horseshoe Cottage and Rosa Bella are dog friendly.
The rewilded meadow at Roulotte Retreat is a highlight, with native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers to attract wildlife and increase biodiversity. Each roulotte is thoughtfully placed and secluded around the meadow's wildlife pond to ensure privacy amongst nature, whilst being surrounded by the beauty of the Scottish Borders countryside. As we wandered the grounds, we encountered friendly chickens, Scarlet the goose, and Ava, the owners' good-natured deerhound lurcher puppy who has just joined their family. Waking up to views of the legendary Eildon Hills and the sound of birdsong each morning was a true escape from the busy-ness of everyday life.
For guests interested in wellness, Roulotte Retreat offers roulottes with outdoor wood fired copper bathtubs, wooden hot tub, eco saunas with panorama windows which look out across fields and meadow towards sunset, yoga and mindfulness sessions as well as nearby local massage therapists. Excellent walking right from the end of the drive through woodlands, hiking up the hills, strolling by the River Tweed or some open water wild swimming in the nearby nature reserve loch completes a stay of natural wellbeing. Spending time in the wood-fired eco sauna, surrounded by the wild landscape, was a restorative experience — a chance to reconnect and recharge.

For anyone seeking an escape into nature with the comforts of a relaxing, characterful haven, Roulotte Retreat provides the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and enchantment in the heart of the Scottish Borders. From romantic roulotte hideaways to family-friendly cottage, Roulotte Retreat provides something truly magical for every guest. It’s an experience to cherish, leaving you longing to return.
Over the years many couples have 'tied the knot' and got married in the wildflower meadow, enjoying a relaxed celebration with style in the romantic French roulottes in the heart of the Scottish Borders Countryside. Workshops in foraging, creative writing, photography, gin tasting, painting, wellbeing and many creative pursuits have also been hosted in Roulotte Retreat's 1950's Studio and on its covered deck amidst Scots Pines.
