A Subtropical Retreat on the Edge of the Sea

Rising gently from a secluded islet just off Okinawa’s west coast, the Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island, Okinawa offers the kind of effortless calm that can only come from being surrounded entirely by sea and sky. Accessible via a scenic causeway, the resort feels blissfully remote while remaining just an hour’s drive from Naha Airport — balancing island escape with easy access.

Words by Adam Chan.

The resort unfolds across two distinct areas: the seven-storey main tower on Seragaki Island, home to over 320 ocean-view rooms and suites, and the more intimate Beach House, located on the mainland-facing side of the bay, featuring spacious one and two-bedroom residences with kitchenettes — perfect for longer stays or families. Across both spaces, the aesthetic is breezy and understated, marked by warm wood tones, natural textures, and endless ocean vistas. Every room comes with a private balcony and a water view — either out to the East China Sea or across the calm, protected lagoon.

Arriving at the open-air lobby, guests are greeted by towering ceilings, a contemporary whale sculpture floating overhead, and the traditional Okinawan shisa guardians, which symbolise protection and good fortune. This blend of island artistry and polished minimalism runs throughout the resort — from woven local textiles and pottery to gentle nods to Ryukyuan architecture in the building’s curves and stonework.

Wellness is a cornerstone here. The resort’s Spa Hanari draws on Okinawan botanicals and holistic Japanese treatments, offering ocean-inspired rituals and restorative therapies in a setting designed to soothe. Guests also have access to a 24-hour fitness centre, a serene indoor pool, and a freeform outdoor pool overlooking the sea — some areas even using filtered seawater, echoing the resort’s natural setting. Morning yoga and cultural activities are available daily, including shisa-painting workshops.

Dining spans local flavour and international flair. Shirakachi serves Japanese cuisine in four expressions: Japanese kaiseki, teppanyaki, sushi, and robatayaki, using island-grown ingredients. The adjacent Shirakachi Bar offers sake and Japanese whisky with sunset views. Over at Serale, guests can enjoy a bountiful breakfast buffet or return in the evening as a steakhouse when it becomes Serale Grill, or delight yourself at Cucina Serale, their Italian restaurant with a trattoria-style dinner experience. There’s also a Poolside Bar that opens seasonally — perfect spots to take in Okinawa’s famously golden sunsets with a cocktail in hand.

The resort’s private-feeling Seragaki Beach offers safe, swimmable waters thanks to buoyed-off sections and gentle slopes, making it ideal for families or leisurely snorkelling. Though technically public, the beach is quiet and largely used by guests. For those looking to engage more deeply, the hotel now runs a clownfish reef restoration programme, where guests can learn about Okinawa’s marine life and contribute to conservation efforts.

With its gentle pace, thoughtful details, and strong sense of place, Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island, Okinawa doesn’t need to overstate itself. It simply delivers: intuitive service, coastal serenity, and a genuine connection to the natural and cultural beauty of Okinawa.
