In the heart of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, a city famed for classical Buddhist temples, imperial palaces and Shinto shrines, sit two temples at opposing angles, their traditional ornamentation steeped in history.

The Higashi Honganji Temple, one of the greatest centres of Buddhism, lies to the east, while the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple is located to the west. Among the old stands the new: Dusit Thani Kyoto, a hotel that embodies a masterful approach to contemporary design and exceptional hospitality. Opened in September 2023, this luxury urban sanctuary is one of Kyoto’s newest hotels, the latest addition to the Dusit International group, one of Thailand’s leading hotel and property development companies. Located just five minutes by taxi from Kyoto Station, Dusit Thani is perfectly situated for convenient transport links and is already gaining a reputation for its impeccable service.

Outside, one is immediately struck by the dramatic exterior that hints at the exquisite décor within–– a perfect location for an editorial where traditional meets modern, and Japanese and Thai influences harmoniously blend. Dusit Thani’s linear exterior, featuring a series of vertical wooden shutters, is striking enough by day. By night, these bold vertical sentinels, a distinctive architectural feature found throughout the city, are illuminated with warm lights from within, enticing guests inside.

In the lobby, neutral tones in soft leather and wood complement the warm copper and cool azure ribbons that elegantly dance around the ceiling. The impeccable surroundings combine clean lines, pristine spaces and bold palettes, hinting at the refined experience to come. The hotel’s modern interiors reflect those of Dusit Thani’s sister sites across the globe, while also highlighting the unique attributes of its local surroundings. Within the hotel’s modern, minimalist rooms, you will find features such as sumptuous beds that pay homage to Japanese tradition. Wooden Shoji panels frame the expansive windows, inviting guests to revel in the incredible views of the gardens and the city below. Looking further, one can even see Osaka stretched out in the distance.

During Our stay at Dusit Thani, we observe the unmatched attention to detail that echoes through the hotel’s design. We capture stunning impressions of models against the Japanese-Thai interiors, with staff ensuring our shoot goes smoothly and every need is accounted for.

The hotel’s signature fine dining restaurant, Ayatana, embodies the city’s Buddhist heart with references to the six senses, taking guests on a cultural journey, while its menu elevates Thai-Japanese fusion. We sample the à la carte  breakfast with an expansive range of culinary offerings that blend eastern and western options, including continental breakfast, pancakes and eggs Benedict. Hotel Dusit Thani seamlessly brings a touch of Thai spirit into the heart of Kyoto while respecting local culture. This mindful approach can be observed in every detail, resulting in a stay like none other.
